Quick answer: One gram of 14K gold is worth $75.93 in pure metal at the spot price of $4,048.80 per troy ounce, as of October 28, 2026. That is the melt value, the gold content and nothing else. It is the number a buyer starts from, not the number a buyer pays.
Open a jewelry box in almost any American home and most of what you find is 14K. Wedding bands, chains, hoop earrings, a charm bracelet from a grandparent: 14K is the everyday karat in the United States because it holds a shape, resists scratches better than richer alloys, and still looks like gold. This page prices that one karat, gram by gram, and then explains why the figure above is a ceiling when you sell.
| Weight | In pennyweights | 14K melt value |
|---|---|---|
| 1 g | 0.64 dwt | $75.93 |
| 2 g | 1.29 dwt | $151.87 |
| 5 g | 3.22 dwt | $379.67 |
| 10 g | 6.43 dwt | $759.34 |
| 20 g | 12.86 dwt | $1,518.67 |
| 25 g | 16.08 dwt | $1,898.34 |
| 50 g | 32.15 dwt | $3,796.68 |
| 100 g | 64.30 dwt | $7,593.36 |
The table runs from 1 gram to 100 grams. Each row is weight multiplied by 58.3% multiplied by the spot price per gram. For a quick check, 10 grams of 14K works out to $759.34 and 25 grams to $1,898.34. Anything with a different weight can be run through the gold value calculator.
What the 585 stamp is telling you
Most 14K pieces carry a small stamp reading 14K, 14KT or 585. The 585 is the fineness: 585 parts of gold per thousand, which is the same 58.3% written another way. The remaining 41.7% is other metal, commonly copper, silver or zinc, and nickel or palladium in white gold. Those metals give the piece strength and color, but they add almost nothing to its melt value.
A stamp is a claim by the maker, not proof. Plated and gold-filled items can also carry marks that look similar at a glance, so a stamp on its own does not settle what you are holding. The gold purity chart lays out the marks side by side and explains how a dealer confirms what is really in a piece.
Why a buyer pays less than the table
Here is the part most people skip. The figure in the table is the value of the gold inside the piece at today's spot price. A buyer who melts it down has to pay for testing, refining, insurance and a margin, and that has to come out of what they offer you.
Take a common example: a 14K chain that weighs 12 pennyweight, which is 12 dwt, or roughly 18.7 grams. At today's spot price its melt value is $1,417.08. If a buyer offers 80% of melt, which is a figure inside the range the trade often reports for mail-in and local buyers, the offer comes to $1,133.66. Same chain, same day, a gap you can see in dollars before anyone has talked about anything else.
Reported payout ranges vary widely. Refiners, who often want a minimum lot, are said to pay roughly 90 to 98 percent of melt. Mail-in and online buyers are commonly reported at 70 to 90 percent, local buyers and jewelers at 60 to 85 percent, and pawn counters often well below that. These are ranges reported by the trade, not quotes, and a given buyer may fall outside them. Weigh your piece, read the table, and ask every buyer for the percentage of melt they are paying, in writing, before you hand anything over.
Selling 14K? Treat the table as the ceiling of what any buyer will offer and the scrap payout as something lower, so collect two or three written quotes before you decide.

How much does a typical 14K piece weigh?
Rough ranges help you sanity-check a number before you reach for a scale. These are general figures; real pieces vary a great deal with style and length.
- A plain thin wedding band often falls somewhere around 2 to 5 grams.
- A wide or heavy band can reach 8 grams or more.
- A pair of small stud earrings is often well under 2 grams in total.
- A light chain necklace may sit around 3 to 10 grams, while a thick curb or rope chain can run past 20 grams.
- A charm bracelet or a heavy cuff can pass 25 grams.
Use the table rows for 5, 10 and 20 grams to see where an item lands. Stones, clasps, solder joints and hollow sections all change the true gold weight, which is one reason the weight on your kitchen scale and the weight a buyer credits can differ.
One gram of 14K next to its neighbours
The easiest way to feel the karat scale is to hold the weight constant and move the purity. One gram of 14K is worth $75.93. A gram of 10K gold is worth $54.24, because it is only 41.7% gold. A gram of 18K gold is worth $97.63, since 75% of it is gold. Step up to 22K and the figure is $119.32, and at 24K it reaches $130.04.
So 14K sits in the middle of the range: noticeably more gold than 10K, noticeably less than 18K. Many buyers choose it for that balance of durability and gold content. If you want every karat and every weight in a single grid, the gold price per gram page has it, and the main gold value chart shows the spot price they all come from.
What this chart cannot tell you
The figure above is calculated, not offered. It does not include a buyer's margin, any dealer fee, the weight of non-gold parts, or the effect of a maker's design on what a collector might pay. It cannot know whether your particular piece is really 14K. A vintage signed piece may be worth more than its metal, and a damaged piece worth only its metal. Treat the number as a reference point and ask for real quotes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out 14K gold value by hand?
Divide the spot price per troy ounce by 31.1034768 to get a price per gram of pure gold, then multiply by 0.583 for 14K and by the weight in grams. Today's pure-gold gram is $130.17, so one gram of 14K comes to $75.93.
Is 14K gold worth keeping or selling?
That depends on your situation, and we do not give personal financial advice. What the data can say is that the melt value moves with spot, so the same piece is worth a different amount on different days. Compare written quotes before deciding.
Why does my 14K ring weigh less in gold than on the scale?
The scale weighs everything: the gold alloy plus any stones, glue, plating or solder. Only the metal counts toward melt value, so a ring with stones can contain noticeably less gold than its total weight suggests.
What is the difference between 14K and 10K?
14K is 58.3% gold and 10K is 41.7% gold, so per gram 14K is worth about 40 percent more in metal. See the 10K page for the full comparison and the 18K page for the step up.
