22K Gold Price Per Gram Today

$119.32 per gram of 22K gold

$185.57 per pennyweight · $3,711.40 per troy ounce of 22K

Gold spot $4,048.80/oz · updated

Quick answer: A gram of 22K gold has a melt value of $119.32 at the current spot price of $4,048.80 per troy ounce. That is 22 parts gold out of 24, or about 91.7% pure. A 10 gram piece is worth $1,193.24 in metal, before any maker's charge or any buyer's discount.

Selling 22K gold? Treat the number above as a ceiling: it is the metal's value at spot, not an offer, and a refiner or jeweler will quote below it.

How the 22K figure is built

Every row on this site comes from one number, the spot price per troy ounce. Divide it by 31.1034768 and you get the value of a gram of pure gold, $130.04 right now. Multiply by 22/24 and you have the 22K figure on this page.

That is all the table below does. It takes the 22K gram value and stacks it up for the weights people actually put on a scale.

22K gold value by weight in grams at today's spot price (melt value)
WeightIn pennyweights 22K melt value
1 g0.64 dwt$119.32
2 g1.29 dwt$238.65
5 g3.22 dwt$596.62
10 g6.43 dwt$1,193.24
20 g12.86 dwt$2,386.49
25 g16.08 dwt$2,983.11
50 g32.15 dwt$5,966.21
100 g64.30 dwt$11,932

Two cautions about reading it. First, the table assumes the item is truly 22K all the way through; a stamp is a claim, not a measurement. Second, the weight must be the gold alone. A pendant with a glass stone or a steel clasp weighs more than its gold does.

Why the Eagle and the Krugerrand are 22K and still hold one full ounce

Here is the oddity that surprises people. The American Gold Eagle is a 22K coin, yet the one-ounce version holds exactly one troy ounce of gold. How?

The coin is heavier than an ounce. It weighs 33.931 grams in total, and 22/24 of that mass is gold, which works out to one troy ounce. The rest is copper and silver, added to make the coin tougher. The South African Krugerrand follows the same recipe at 33.93 grams and .9167 fineness.

So when you look at a 22K coin, the number on its face describes gold content, not total weight. For comparison, the Buffalo and the Maple Leaf are close to pure at .9999 and weigh about 31.1 grams. Our 24K page covers those, and the price per ounce page shows how the troy ounce turns into grams.

22K jewelry and the tola

Outside coins, 22K is most often seen in South Asian and Middle Eastern jewelry, where bangles, chains and bridal sets are traditionally made at high purity. Sellers in those markets often weigh in tola, an older unit of about 11.66 grams.

At today's feed, one tola of 22K gold has a melt value of $1,391.77. That is the metal only. Finished pieces are usually priced with a making charge on top, and the charge is not part of the melt value you would get back from a buyer.

If you are converting a family piece, weigh it in grams if you can. Then pick the right row in the table above, or use the gold value calculator to enter an odd weight.

Softness, stamps and what 916 means

Higher purity means softer metal. A 22K ring dents and scratches more readily than a 14K one, which is the main reason most American jewelry sits lower on the scale. See the 14K gram price for the everyday alternative, or the 18K page for the middle ground. The 10K page covers the hardest and cheapest end.

Look for a stamp of 916 or 917, or "22K". It is the fineness in parts per thousand: 916 is a fraction under 91.7%. A mark helps, but it does not prove anything on its own, and our gold purity chart lists the other common stamps and the tests used to check them.

A worked example: a 0.35 ounce piece

Say you are holding a small 22K item, such as a pendant, that weighs 0.35 troy ounces, a little under 11 grams. At live spot its gold content is worth $1,298.99.

Now suppose a buyer offers less. That is normal, and the gap pays for testing, resale and the buyer's margin. Trade reports describe refiners paying roughly 90 to 98% of melt, mail-in buyers 70 to 90%, and local shops 60 to 85%; those are ranges reported by the trade, never quotes. So the figure above is where a negotiation starts, not where it ends.

For the wider picture, the per gram page puts all five karats side by side. The gold value chart home page shows spot with a year of history.

What this chart can't tell you: the melt value says nothing about a coin's collector premium, a piece's craftsmanship, or what any particular buyer will pay today.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams of pure gold are in a gram of 22K?

About 0.917 grams. The remaining 0.083 grams is another metal, usually copper or silver, which makes the alloy harder and shifts the color a little.

Is 22K gold worth more per gram than 18K?

Yes, because it holds more gold. Using the figures on this site, 22K is $119.32 a gram against $97.63 for 18K, since both are the same spot price multiplied by a different purity.

Why do buyers pay less than the 22K price shown?

The table is the metal's value at spot. A buyer has to test the piece, cover the cost of refining or resale, and keep a margin. Ask for the offer as a percentage of melt, in writing.

Can I buy 22K gold coins by the gram?

Coins are sold by the piece, not by the gram, and the price includes a premium over the gold content. See where to buy gold for how that premium works.
