Quick answer: Pure 24K gold is $130.04 per gram at live spot. That is $4,048.80 per troy ounce divided by 31.1034768, then trimmed to the 99.9% commercial standard. This is the base row of the whole site. Every other karat is this number scaled down by its purity. If the gold is 99.99% pure, the gram is worth $130.16.

Think of the 24K gram as the root of a family tree. Take 14/24 of it and you have 14K, take 18/24 and you have 18K. The 14K, 10K, 18K and 22K pages are all the same sum with a different fraction.
For quick comparison across the family in one view, see the gold price per gram page. For an item of unusual weight, the gold value calculator does the multiplication for you.

| 5 g | 3.22 dwt | $650.21 |
| 10 g | 6.43 dwt | $1,300.42 |

99.9 or 99.99: does the extra nine matter?
Most bullion is stamped .999, meaning 99.9% gold. Some mints go further, with .9999 coins and bars sometimes called four nines. The difference is about a tenth of a percent, so a gram of the finer product is worth $130.16 against $130.04 for plain 24K.
For a single gram that is a rounding error. It starts to show only at larger weights. A one kilogram bar, for example, holds about one gram more gold in the four-nines version. Dealers rarely charge the difference as a separate line; it shows up inside the premium instead.
Bars, coins and the gram bar
Bullion arrives in several shapes. Bars are priced close to their gold content, with a premium that tends to fall as the bar gets heavier. Coins carry a higher premium because they are minted, recognised and easy to resell in small pieces.
A gram bar is the smallest everyday format. At live spot its metal is worth $130.04, yet the price a retailer asks will include fabrication, packaging and margin that can be large relative to a single gram. At the other end, a 1 ounce bar has a melt value of $4,048.80 and a 10 ounce bar $40,488. The price per ounce page walks through those larger units.
Beware of a common mix-up. Several popular coins are 22K, not 24K, and still contain one ounce of gold; the 22K page explains how.
Why jewelry is rarely 24K
A worked case makes the point. Picture a 5 gram item of pure gold: at live spot its metal is worth $650.79. The same 5 grams in a 14K band would hold far less gold, which is why the sticker prices of the two rarely resemble each other even though both weigh the same on a scale.
Pure gold is soft enough to bend by hand when thick and to scratch easily when thin. Jewelers alloy it with copper, silver or zinc so that a ring survives daily wear. That is why wedding bands are commonly 14K or 18K and why a 24K necklace is a specific, deliberate choice.
If you are checking a piece, the gold purity chart shows the stamps to look for: 999 for pure gold, 916 for 22K, 750 for 18K, 585 for 14K and 417 for 10K.
A word on buying, and on Augusta's minimum
The 24K gram is where readers who want to buy tend to look, so a short note belongs here. This site is free to use, and it may earn a commission from Augusta Precious Metals if you request its information kit through our link. The gold value chart home page explains how the money works.
Be clear about fit. Augusta has a $50,000 minimum, whether you buy with cash or for an IRA. That makes it a poor match if you want one coin, a single bar or a few grams. It is a better match if you are considering a larger purchase and want one-on-one education before you decide.
This button requests Augusta's free Gold & Silver IRA information kit. After you submit the request, Augusta will phone you.
If you are earlier in the process, our where to buy gold guide covers coins versus bars, premiums, and the questions to ask any dealer.
What this chart can't tell you: the melt value is the gold inside a product, not its retail price. A coin or bar will cost more than the figures above, and a buyer will pay less.
Frequently asked questions
Is 24K gold the same as 999 gold?
Essentially yes. The 999 stamp means 99.9% pure, and 24K is the karat name for pure gold. Some products are .9999 and go a decimal place further.
Why is the 24K gram price lower than a bar's price per gram?
A bar's price includes a premium over the melt value for fabrication, distribution and the dealer's margin. The premium is usually a smaller share on heavier bars.
How do I turn the ounce price into a gram price?
Divide the price per troy ounce by 31.1034768. At today's $4,048.80 that gives $130.17 for a gram of pure gold.
Can I sell 24K gold for the price shown?
Expect an offer below it. The table is melt value at spot, which works as a ceiling for sellers. Trade reports describe refiner payouts of about 90 to 98% of melt for large lots and lower for retail buyers; those are ranges, not quotes.
